« on: Friday 26 October 07 05:17 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I have lost a family between the England census' of 1881 and 1891.

1881 Census

Born St. Austell, Cornwall, England
Presently located, St. Ive, Cornwall, England.
Occupation: School master.

Can only find Percy Hammer in the 1891 census - newly married. None of the rest of the family are there.

Could they have emigrated somewhere??? How do I find out??

Thanks everyone for your advice.

Can't be sure if this will help but just in case:
My Nicholas Harry 1800-1846 a tin miner from St Stephen in Brannel married 18.11.1822 St Mewan, Jane/Jennifer Hammer 1804-1874.She died 29.3.1874 St Austell.
In 1841 the family was living at Western Boscundle- St Austell.
In 1851 they were living at Bucklers St Austell.
One of their sons,John Hammer Harry b1837 was my great grandfather. He came to Australia c1864.

I have discovered that I have some Hammer family data which may be of interest to you.
Charles Henry Hammer bpt.11.6.1843 St Austell married Elizabeth??? c1866.
Charles was a son of John Hammer bpt.1.4.1798 St Mewan and Elizabeth (Betsy)Coch (Cock). They married 17.10.1818 St Mewan.
Harold Augustus Hammer was born 1880 St Ives.
Unless I am mistaken, the John Hammer who married Elizabeth Coch/Cock is a brother of my Jenny Hammer.
There are lots of Hammer branches mainly located St Mewan,St Austell with some obviously migrating to Victoria.
Wyatt and Wood of Glossop, Derbyshire. Longstaff of Bishop Auckland,Durham. Harry of St Austell and St Kew,Cornwall. Charters of County Antrim.Knight of Warwickshire.Hendy of Ballyedmonduff.

Thanks Wozzle.I think this tells us it was Elizabeth Chynoweth who married Charles.
Unfortunately I have lost contact with the person who gave me the Hammer data back in 1999.I recall his name was David Kilpen.
I think a John Harry b1821 St Austell may have married a Maria Hammer bpt.5.8.1823 St Mewan.I think he may have died Oct.1865 Rio Grande De Sol Brazil. He was a miner.

There's a death for Charles Henry Hammer in Plymouth in 1894, aged 51 - could be yours?

I think Lilian Althea is the Lily A. Hammer aged 15 who is at a "Ladies College" in Devon in 1891 (you'll find her at freecen.rootsweb.com).

There is a possiblity at www.findmypast.com - in 1897, both L. Hammer, 21 (female) and H. Hammer, 17 (male) seem to have left for South Africa.

http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm300dl - if you go here, and search under "RSA" for Harold and Hammer, you will get a hit for estate papers of Harold Augustus Hammer in 1940.  If you search for Lilian and Hammer, there is a "Mortgage Bond" for William Michie and Lilian Alethea Hammer in 1903.

http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/SOUTH-AFRICA-IMMIGRANTS-BRITISH/2003-09/1063540587 - and a mention here of a marriage, Frederick George Hammer to Lilian Alethea Hammer in 1897!  If you search above for him, there's also a mention of a death notice for Frederick George in 1903, and something about the mortgage with William Michie in 1903 with his name on it as well (perhaps after he died Lilian had to transfer the mortgage into her name?)
