I would love that to be the case, but old George (my gt grandfather) was a tailor at Potternewton in the 1901 census. He was also listed as a tailor in the 1891 census, living at Bradford.

Young George was not at home.

I have no idea who this is now :'(

Hi Karen

What made you think it was George in the first place? Is there anything written on the back of the photo? Is the name of the photographer's studio there? Sometimes that can help dating a photo.

Judy ;)
Best wishes, Judy :-))

My grandmother moved to Australia in the 1920's, & never saw her 7 brothers & sisters again.
She kept in contact with them all via letters & had lots of photos of everyone...but when she passed away in the 1970's, my mother threw everything out...even photos.

Now last year, I found a descendant of my Grandmother's sister. She sent me some photos via email. She even had photos of me as a kid...Crazy.

Anyway...she sent me this photo saying it was George McKinley, her uncle...gt uncle I guess.

So I won't be able to check the back, and I've lost contact with the lady who sent them.
I'll try to find her again.

Is it possible to eliminate the KOYLIs? Was not their badge a french horn (ie with a loop containing a rose) rather than the sinple curve. Or was that only the cap badge that was different? Take a look.

Peter,
I'm not too sure of myself when it comes to collar badges, but I had the same thought as you, I always thought the KOYLI badge was different.

Likewise can we eliminate the Somerset LI? Don't their collar badges have the mural crown and Jellalabad scroll like the cap badges.

Look at this example. Yes it's been hand-coloured and lost detail but even so the collar badge seems to have the Jellalabad scroll.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone.

I have been Googling (I am a dog with a bone now :))

All the badges seem to have the widest part of the bugle on the left.  George has the widest part on the right.

Is this significant??

Or could the phot have been reversed ???

The light infantry badges are here .. ..

Also...George was Irish...is it possible he was in an Irish uniform???

Hi Karen

The photograph is the right way around. His tunic is buttoned the ‘boys’ way – left over right.

But well spotted about the reversed collar badge. They came in mirrored pairs the right collar badge matched the cap badge, The one visible in your photograph is the left one.

Here is a pair of collar badges to show what I mean:

Ps: Ireland did not have it's own army until after 1922

Thanks Ken.

So he is definitely in an English light infantry.

He doesn't have a wedding ring on.

If they all wore rings in those days...could it be George senior before his marriage 1884???

Could the photo be that old???

I have no record of George before the 1891 census...when he was a tailor in Bradford.

I think I am clutching at straws now :(
