Quiggin, IOM
« on: Saturday 27 October 07 14:15 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on Elizabeth Quiggin b. circa 1760 IOM - married
04 SEP 1785 to Aaron Alcock St James Church Toxteth Liverpool, Lancashire.

I have found two possibilites on the IGI for Elizabeth and although both list the same parents, the Christening dates are different.

ELIZABETH QUIGGAN
Christening:  28 FEB 1768   Saint Mathews, Douglas, Isle Of Man, England
Parents: JOHN QUIGGAN and  ISABELL CUBBIN

ELIZTH QUIGGIN
Christening:  17 JAN 1762   Saint Mathews, Douglas, Isle Of Man, England
JOHN QUIGGIN and ELIZTH CUBBON

Can anyone help to verify this information?

Regards,

Yvonne

Quiggin  /  Cubbin     are    distinctive    Manx    names.   Both   are    extracted   entries   from   the   records    of
St   Matthew's   church   on   Douglas   quayside.  [  C of  E  -  High   church]
If   both   parents   were   the    same  you    would   expect   first   Elizabeth   died   and    was   "replaced  "   to  ensure
continuity  of   a    family   name.   But   these   are    common   surnames   &    you   seem  to  have   two   couples.

Can    you   find   marriages   on   igi/familysearch   for    both   Elizabeths ?

Hi Voirrey M,

Thanks so much for your reply.   I found a marriage on the IG for JOHN QUIGGIN and ISABEL CUBBON married 19 FEB 1757 Braddan, Isle Of Man.   I also found a marriage for an Elizabeth Quiggin (no birth date) married to William Kneen 29 SEP 1786 Braddan, Isle Of Man, England - so one would assume that this is one family

This leaves me with ELIZTH QUIGGIN Christening:  17 JAN 1762 Saint Mathews, Douglas, Isle Of Man, England with parents JOHN QUIGGIN and ELIZTH CUBBON.   I can find no marriage for this Elizabeth or for John Quiggin to Elizabeth Cubbon.   Assuming she is the Elizabeth Quiggin who married my Aaron Alcock in Liverpool, is there any possible way in which I can confirm this?   The Parish Reg. for their marriage unfortunately does not list parents names.

I suppose one would refer to this as 'THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA' and not just a mere brickwall!   Any suggestions welcome.

Yvonne

the two elizth cubbons look to be from the same family - the first has mo elizth but child eliz (an all too common IGI mistranscription) but you should check the film of the 1911 official copy of the parish reg - however my guess is that this eliz died of smallpox in 1765 and is buried at Onchan 10 may 1765.  This would tie in with the burial of the Mother  in Onchan  17930531 which also involved a transfer from Braddan - my guess is that the family lived in Douglas but had some connection with Onchan (North Douglas) - the mother left no will (wills + burials etc can be seen on www.lawsons.ca - many thousand will transcripts on www.manxnotebook.com) - there are a few John Quiggins whose wills might be looked at.
There is an Elizth c/o John Quaggan bapt Malew 17600309 who might fit.

You also need to be aware that the manx custom was to give the father's name to illegitimate children but the IGI in its wisdom adopted the English custom of giving the mothers name - however there are none I can see
any thing with a Manx Connection

Hi Frances,

Thank you so much for your reply and the information.   I will go through this carefully as well as check out the links.

The 1760 Baptism in Malew dos look promising.

Once again, many thanks and regards,

Yvonne
