Marriage June quarter 1888
Lancaster 8e 1091
Thomas Henry Gill to possibly Margaret Ann Grime Margaret Knowles

According to Lancashire BMD, it looks like the bride was Margaret Knowles (marriage at Lancaster Register office)

I can see a Margaret Knowles in 1871, born Milnthorpe, living at Haversham with Milnthorpe. Shout if you want the details (large family! :P)

Sorry to say I haven't met any other families when looking for them  :P Can't help after 1901 either  :(

1871
RG10/5289 24 9
Heversham With Milnthorpe, Westmorland
Milthorpe

Robert Knowles, head, 53, Licensed Hawker, b. Lancs Ikerton
Ellen, wife, 52, ditto, b. Cumberland Keswick
Betsy, dau, unm, 26, House work, b. Yorkshire Seabergh
Ellen, dau, unm, 22, Hawker, b. Westmorland Milnthorpe
Thomas, son, 18, Tailor, b. do. - deaf and dumb
John, son, 16, Labourer, b. do.
Joseph, son, 15, b. do.
Martha, dau, 13, b. do. - deaf and dumb
Margaret, dau, 9, b. do. - deaf and dumb
John, grandson, 1, b. do.

3 deaf & dumb children! Additionnally, in 1881, Betsy is down as an imbecile  :(

Hmm. I'm wondering a little now - 1891 annd 1901 don't say Margaret was deaf & dumb  ???

your help is much appreciated;D

Well in 1881 Margaret is a dressmaker - still deaf and dumb though.

It all ties in very nicely but still I'm surprised it doesn't say she's deaf & dumb later in life! Maybe you should get Winifred's birth cert to make sure her mother was Margaret Knowles.

Here's a thread about hawkers:
