Don't think it's as confusing as it sounds at first.
here is more worms for the can, it looks to me like the details were just taken wrong, could he have been married before. marriage. JOHN CANNERY TO MARY CARTON 20-11-1862. MATHERAFELT DERRY/LDERRY.
FATHERS. JOHN CANNERY & HUGH CARTON.
Marriage cert of John Canning & Mary Cartin 20 Nov 1862
marriage at magherafelt registrars office on 20 november 1862 john canning, full age, widower, shoemaker, residence - tobermore parish of kilcronaghan, father - john canning, labourer .....mary carlin, full age, spinster, occupation looks to be a ditto ie shoemaker, residence - lemnaroy parish of termoneeny, father - hugh carlin, labourer witnesses - mathew cavin and james hagan
this gives Mary,s surname as Carlin not Carten and John Canning as a widower

There is no Cartin/Carlin or anything close in Lemnaroy at time of Griffith's Valuation (1859). Also no Canning/Cannery or anything close in Tobermore. See correction below

Marriage date is same on both 20 Nov.1862 at Magherafelt
John Canning/Cannery to Mary Cartin/Carlin.

Apparently Tobermore is listed in about 6 different places in Griffiths. Found what is probably the above Robert Canning in the townland of Calmore:
Robert Canning 0 acres 0 rods 20 perches- house, yard & garden
There's also a Robert Kenning in the same townland with land only which could be the same person.
