Learmount Castle
« on: Sunday 28 October 07 18:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Does anyone know where I can get any details on Learmount Castle in Co. Londonderry?  I visited last week and it is a derelict shell but I believe my Great Grandfather worked there and that my grandfather was born in Learmount in 1906.

I have looked but cannot find any mention of it anywhere in any books or Online.

Any guidance would be gratefully received,

Thanks

Kev

Put 'learmount castle derry' in Google and lots of items came up.

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Kev

There are some Beresford (Learmount) documents in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland. I'm afraid I don't know if they have any relevant information.

aghadowey, thanks, I searched this and many are about the forest trail that exists around the old castle, but a few others have come up that give me something.

Kintree,  Thanks, it looks like another trip to Belfast!

Thanks

Hello Kev,

Henry de La Pore Beresford started to build Learmount Castle circa 1830 on a site which overlooked the river Faughan close to Park village.

The Ballina Chronicle dated Wednesday 13th February 1850 reported that the Lady of John B. Beresford gave birth to a son at Learmount, County Derry. Source: irelandoldnews.com

PRONI hold the Beresford Rent Rolls 1852: D1550/84 in their archives.

The 1880 directory of Belfast and Ulster on the Lennon Wylie website shows that John Barre Beresford, M.A., Learmount Castle, Londonderry; Ashbrook, Londonderry was a Deputy Lieutenant.

There are also references to the Beresfords on www.thepeerage.com/p3258.htm

If you post details of the names of your ancestors, someone may be able to confirm birth details etc....

I have got my Mercer ancestors back to the mid 1700's, I was able to tie them into the research of Chris Brennen at his website :http://www.dankat.com/earls/content.htm
I had a quick look for a marriage without success, but there are a few birth records for Elizabeth Mercer that would fit.
Perhaps you could email Chris to see if he has a record that has not been added to his website yet.

Good luck
