Bury St Edmunds Workhouse
« on: Monday 29 October 07 09:45 GMT (UK) »
I have discovered a relative who was born in the workhouse and appears as 3 months old on the 1841 census.
I have also found her mother & brothers (?) in the same workhouse in the 1841 census but they apper to have been separated and are on different pages.
Please can anyone help me with workhouse records for the family?

Matilda Spalding b 1/3/1841 - no father shown on birth certificate
Sarah Spalding b 1803-6
Edward Spalding b 1834
Thomas Spalding b 1835 (ch 29/12/1835?)

All above on 1841 census

In 1851 Sarah has married and been widowed living elsewhere
but in 1851 Matilda & Sarah are back in the workhouse.

All help appreciated.

Thanks AB9

Hi ab9

Bury St Edmunds Workhouse records are only available from the Suffolk Record Office I'm afraid, but minute books for the period you are interested in have survived.  These are very often an invaluable source of biographical information.

For general information about BstE workhouse;

http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/

Using the Left hand side menu, select

"Workhouse Locations" then

"English Poor Law Unions" then

"Suffolk"

Then Bury St Edmunds
