Have you thought about seeing if the RAChD Museum can help?
As it was not a big Corps they might have something.

Yes I have ... and I have his service record but there's hardly anything in it ... just a few cryptic remarks ... like he was in Fort Matilda from April 1915 - June 1915 when he embarked for France

that's about the only date in there ... nothing on his medal card !!  ::)

I'm trying to piece together very very little and it's frustrating !!

I also see that the 1/5th (Renfrewshire) Battalion Princess Louise's (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) T.F. were based in Greenock but were at the Drill Hall, Finnart Street, Greenock.
They left for Egypt in 1915.

9th (Reserve) Battalion RSF were raised in Gourock October 1914 as a service Battalion.  In 1915 became a reserve Battalion, so it could have been them!   ???  If he was then shipped off to another Battalion in France.
