John Payne Will 1761, transcription help please
« on: Tuesday 30 October 07 09:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi there

I spent yesterday transcribing a 3 page! yes 3 page will! and got it down to just a handful of words I need some confirmation and help on!

The first piece is the longest bit I couldn't read.  I've also added the top so that you can read it and get a feel for the will.

The words that I can't get on the first one are:
6 lines down appointed for all men _______ to dye
9 lines down the Hand of Almighty God who Gave it me ______  is it assuredly?
10 lines down believing that I shall receive the pardon and ____   full makes sense but it doesn't look like full!

Second piece
All my wearing apparel except my __________ suite

2nd piece

sui / summons ?  perhaps he is refering to what he is to be buried in.

3rd piece

it doesn look like socks to me the S is wrong/ different to others such as in shirts, does it end in ks? or ls?

piece 4

6
w.a/o..tced - are the dots h/n or u?

10 lines - down believing that I shall receive the full pardon and free(?) Remission

Piece 3:
Game all my Shirts and Necks ... as in collars, possibly!

Piece 5:
Is it Will annexed of the Goods Chattels and Credits of John.....? Yes, that's what I get.

Piece 6:
Penultimate line:
Will have renounced the Execution thereof

Heh, I had a 1723 will with 12 pages. I was getting more and more irritated while transcribing it - the testator was determined that his land would go to the correct yet-to-be-born relative and there were pages and pages of: to my nephew, then to the 1st son, if not then to the 2nd son, if not then to the 3rd son ... then to the next nephew's 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th sons,  and the next nephew, etc ad infinitum! It was so boring!! :D

Kerry,

My 2 cents worth:

Jp1 - once to dye
Assuredly
full pardon and ? ? remission for all my past sins

Jp2 - don't know

Jp3 - socks

Jp4 - don't know

Jp5 - I agree with you

Jp6 - conducted.

Could be wrong, but that's what I see!

Thanks everyone!

Almost there except this suit!

Some of them are so obvious like free remission - of course it is ::) ::) ::)

Trouble is when you think it is a word it is very hard to convince yourself its another word!!!!

Koromo - 12 pages - goodness, didn't he know when to stop  ;D ;D ;D

could it be Sermon Suit? although the word looks to be dotted as to have an 'I' in it. fromt he wording it looks as if he is leaving his clothing / Apparel to someone except this suit which he is to be uried in or he would be buried naked!

maybe i'm way off the mark here but thats how i understood it.  :D
