Can anyone help me read this??
« on: Tuesday 30 October 07 13:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I was wondering if there is anyone out there who can help me with a maiden surname on a marriage certificate.

The lady in question is my GGGreat nan Mary Stirling - I cannot read her maiden surname. The marriage certificate is for her son Robert Stirling who was born in Ireland in about 1857. He married in 1879 to Janet Mckellar.

That's all the info i have on Robert and his family before he married! I would be so grateful if anyone could throw some light on this for me.

Thank you so much

Tink13 :)

the "n" is like the "n's" in Stirling

have not encountered that name before so that's why I have the ?

Hi Tink,

Welcome to rootschat. Maybe you could discover Mary's maiden name by other means:
- the marriage of James and Mary
- the death of Mary
- the birth or marriage of any of Robert's siblings

Alternatively you could see if Scotland's People can check for you as the image is unreadable. They're usually quite helpful.

Hello

Thank you so much for responding.

Gar -  It does look like Urimen, maybe it could be Iriwen?? All i know it's giving me a headache ;D

Ruskie - I will see if SP can check the image for me, i didn't know they would do that for you. Thank you for the advice about finding the maiden name from another source but that is all the information that i have on the family at that point. All i know is that the son was born in Ireland. I don't know if the mum and dad came from there, if they had any other children or even if it was just Robert that came over from Ireland. Help :o

Seriously, any help would be so welcome.

Regards,

Tink13

This makes no sense vis-a-vis the certificate (or your advice that Robert was born in Ireland) but ...

From the IGI, Robert STIRLING b 13 Jul 1856, parents James STIRLING & Mary GILFELLAN.

 ???

Have you looked for Mary STIRLING, Robert's mother (and Robert), in (say) the 1871 and 1881 (and perhaps earlier) censuses?  This might give a clue to her age and birthplace?  And to Robert's birthplace in 1881 and later censuses?

Hi Jap

Thanks for your reply.

I have found Robert on the 1881 census along with his wife Janet and 10mth old son also called Robert.

The birthplace for Robert is stated as Ireland.

They moved to Silvertown in London and again in both 1891 & 1901 census birthplace is recorded as just Ireland!!

As of yet I cannot find him on the 1871 census.

Regards,

Tink13 :)
