Stonehaven - George Watt
« on: Wednesday 31 October 07 17:24 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find out what I can about my Great-Grandfather, Thrift Watt, who was a saddler in Stonehaven.

He was married twice, his first wife being Isabella Lees, born about 1835, married Thrift on 17-8-1855 and died on 26-8-1867.

I think that they had a daughter, Isabella, born on 29-4-1860, she in turn had an illigitimate son, George Watt, born on 14-12-1877. He was killed at Gallipoli on 28-6-1915. On the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, his mother is given as Isabella Beattie.  I think that she must have married a (?) Beattie after George was born.

Anybody know if this is correct, or any way of finding out?

My Grandmother was the eldest child of Thrift's second marriage, and I've got most of this bit of the family sorted out.

Cheers

Jim

That makes sense.  Isabella was living at Baltic street in Montrose at the time of George's death according to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website.

I wonder what happened to poor Robert.  Mental illness was treated very differently in those days.

Thanks again folks.

That sounds like her right enough.  I have a clock in the house that came from my grandparents. My grandmother was given the clock when she cleared out the house of one of her relatives in Montrose. My uncle always called it "Auntie Izie's clock". "Aunty Izie" would have been Isabella I presume, though there's no way of finding out now.
