Can anyone date this lovely wedding photograph please? COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 01 November 07 14:48 GMT (UK) »
This is a wedding photograph from my husband's side of the family. We have been told the names of the children sitting at the front, but we are not sure our information is correct, as the ages don't seem to tie up.

An accurate date for the photo would help enormously.

Thanks!

It's a wonderful photograph.
I have a photograph of my grandmother at a Garden Party in 1910 and the hats and clothes look very similar.
I'm sure someone else will be more accurate.

Thanks Dot. I think it must be earlier than that though.

If the little girl on the left is who she is supposed to be she would have been born in 1893.

Any more opinions or wild guesses?

I would put this as having been taken between 1900 and 1905(ish). From 1906 the brims on women's hats started to travel outwards until they reached the shoulder and then just as they reached that far they started on a decline so that by 1910/11 they were back to a more manageable width. As well as the brims receeding in 1910/11 hemlines started to rise at that time. Prior to 1910 hemlines were just above the vamp on top of the footwear worn. After 1910 the hemline was either level or above the ankle and by the time of the 1st ww it was betwix the ankle and knee.

Thanks a lot Old Rowley. That would make the little girl between 7 and 12 or so, I should have thought towards the lower end of that range.

Are there any clues in the children's clothing? Would they be typical for the little girls, if they were about seven and eight?

I agree with OR.

From 1893 the top of womens sleeves started getting wider until the leg of mutton style about 1895. These sleeves are pretty close fitting so after 1900 and before the hems started to rise and the hats got enormous.

Thanks Rog. Just after 1900 + a couple or so years makes sense in terms of the ages of the supposed children. I should have said the wedding was in South Wales so I imagine they might have been a bit behind the times in their fashions.

I am sure this is a very silly question but you don't happen to know who the couple are that are getting married do you?

If so a search of FreeBMD might help to pin down the date.

Hi Pinetree

No, unfortunately we don't know who the couple are, although we do know some of the guests. I hope the date range we now have will help us to identify who they are. We think it may be the wedding of one of my husband's great aunts.
