Please help a beginner!!
« on: Tuesday 28 December 04 16:31 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find Dennis RYAN, butcher, believed to have lived in Waterford (city??).

His name is given on the marriage cert of his son Patrick Joseph RYAN, who married in Neath, Glamorgan in 1912.

Patrick was then aged 37 years.  He died when his family was very young and little information was passed on to his children.  The grandparents used to send meat parcels to the young widow on a regular basis.

It is thought that Patrick had two sisters in England, one was a nun and one a matron in a Liverpool hospital.  There may also have been 2 brothers, possibly Michael and Joseph.

Patrick is thought to have left Ireland to join the army, but his mother bought him out.

I have so little to go on, I don't know where to start.  Any advice or info very gratefully recieved.

Thank you, Audrey!  :D

May I ask where the info came from?  If it is him, what should I do next to confirm it and can I find siblings or parents' info from the same/ another source?  Would there be census info online that I could check, or do I need to impose on others to help?

Will now try England/ Wales censuses based on birthplace Tramore and see what happens.

Although I have 3000+ folk on my database, I have been too cowardly to attempt the Irish connection until now!

Sue

Hi Arranroots,

There are several Denis Ryans listed on Griffiths Valuations for Co. Waterford 1848-51.
As Patrick was born in 1875 one of those guys named Denis could be his grand dad
rather than his dad. Is there a pattern of Christian names running through descendents?

Christopher

Hi Christopher

Thanks for your reply.

There are too few generations succeeding Patrick to see any pattern (I can be blamed for one of them, lol!)  Certainly there are no Denises.

I have tried to explore this from the perspective of PJ's army service record, so there are threads about that. Still no progress on the Irish end though.

Looking forward to the census coming along shortly!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Good Afternoon AR,

Two point whatever children, a Labrador, a mortgage and a well known estate car are going to make it difficult for genealogical researchers to establish name patterns in the future. Where have all the large families gone?
