1800 Trade Directories look up
« on: Tuesday 28 December 04 17:01 GMT (UK) »
I would be grateful for any information on Frances BEHOE who can be found on page 52 1830's Pigot's but I have no idea what she was doing!!

I would also be interested on a look up for Thomas BEHOE and his wife Mary Ann.  In 1851 census (Twyford, Hurst) Thomas was an innkeeper but I have been told he is listed in a directory (sorry don't know which one!) as a Brewer.  I would be v grateful for any information I receive about him from abt 1830 to his death in 1856 - but at that point he was a Porter Agent in Reading.

His surname may be misspelt - but have a good guess!

Thank you

Anne-Marie

Hi Anne-Marie,

Frances BEHOE in 1830 Pigot's directory:
Reading / Clothes Dealers / Behoe Frances, 17 Crown st

Thomas BEHOE in 1847 Post Office directory:
Reading / Traders / Behoe Thomas, retail brewer, 53 King's road south

These were the only entries I found - visually, as the pdf search found none! Not very reliable on these old directories.

Twyford comes under Reading in the 1830 & 1844 Pigot's, and has its own (tiny) section in the 1847 PO. The 1830 & 1844 have very little for Twyford - except for taverns!

As I looked through all the taverns (they're listed by tavern name rather than keeper), I've recorded these below. I had a tavern-keeper g3-grandfather (King's Arms, Coventry) and was interested to find other names before and after his reign.

Cheers,
Steve

Twyford Taverns:
Bell, James Hopkins 1830, John Porter 1844, James Goodchild 1847
Bull, John Maynard 1830/1844/1847
Duke of Wellington, Richard Mallett 1830, John Burton 1844/1847
King's Arms, Christopher Cassie 1830, Thomas Gale 1844/1847
Railway, Thomas Monk 1844
Red House, Thomas Desborough 1847
Rose & Crown, George Englefield 1830, William Hancock 1844/1847
Royal Oak, Henry Johnson 1830, Harriet Harris 1844, John Mee 1847
Twyford Station Hotel, Thomas Monk 1844/1847
Waggon and Horses, William Harris 1830, Thomas Goodman 1844/1847
White Horse, John Savage 1830, William Ewing 1844, Jonathan Green 1847
My English ancestry from Berkshire Buckingham Cumberland Gloucester Hereford Hampshire Lancashire London Somerset Staffordshire Warwick Wiltshire Worcester Yorkshire ... so far
