COMPLETED- The McNeilly family Co Down.
« on: Saturday 03 November 07 11:36 GMT (UK) »
This is my first posting on an Irish Site and I am getting desparate now.
Was there a census in 1891 and if so how can I access it? I subscribe to Ancestry.com but that's no help.
I've recently found that my uncle's parents were born in Ireland. In 1901 they were living in Cheshire, and had their family of 3 children in England, but family lore says that the parents were born/came from Newcastle in Co Down.
The father's name was Thomas McNeilly b 1874, and he married Linna Ann also born in Ireland 1869. Where can I search for their marriage, it would have been in Ireland before 1897?
I am now at a dead end and would appreciate some help from a kind soul out there.
Thanking you in anticipation!
Ann.

Hi Ann

1901: RG13 /  Piece 3404/ Folio 79 /  Pg 13

I think the wife's name is written as  Lititia Eliz. ( ie: Letitia Elizabeth) not Linna Ann. The middle name is certainley not Ann on the Census. And for the first name, if you look closely, the first stroke of what you think are the 'n's are higher - and the enumerator does not cross his t's elsewhere on the page, either.

So I checked Emerald Isle database - Good news  ;D
http://www.emeraldancestors.com/index.asp
16 Mar 1896 - Thomas  MCNEILLY  married Letitia E McQUADE in  Downpatrick Down
Civil Marriage at Saintfield Church of Ireland, Parish of Saintfield, Downpatrick, co. Down.

There is just one child with them on the 1901 - looks for all the world like "Ann" - but it's a boy age 2 born Cheshire. Probably he is the William McNEILLY registered in Jun Qtr 1898 Birkenhead RD, Cheshire and he has been written as Wm. on the Census.

Further, there is a death on FREEBMD too:
Letitia E. McNEILLY age 45 - registered Jun Qtr 1915 Birkenhead RD, Chehire

Ros Davies website is excellent for Irish research help in Co Down

If you are looking for Irish census records the 1891 census no longer exists- 1901 is first complete census for Ireland.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you so much AMBLY and AGHADOWEY!!
I really am very impressed with you both. I now have something to go on--so to speak.
Thank you Ambly for doing that lookup for me, I wouldn't have known where to start. The William you found, is in fact the uncle that I remember as a child.
Thank you both once again, I am very grateful to you both for your help, and I shall investigate that link shortly!
Cheers.

Thank you both very much for your help. Since I last wrote, I have been in contact with another member of the Mc Neilly family who lives in the same area. If it hadn't been for your help, I would not have been able to make contact with her, and swop photos.
Thank you once again for your very generous help and your time.
Regards.
