Garlick of Glossop.
« on: Saturday 03 November 07 14:38 GMT (UK) »
Please - can anyone trace the baptism for me for James Garlick b.c.1803 at Glossop?
I have his information from 1841-1861 censuses.

I believe that he later married Harriot nee Osbourne widow of James Taylor.
Many thanks.

If Nicholas Garlick was a Catholic priest, I do hope you are not descended from him! I suppose you have looked at Graham Hadfield's and Marjorie's sites? best wishes, claytonbradley

The Garlicks have been in Glossop for hundreds of years but they are the most awkward I have come across for actually tracing a family line above a few generations.

Most families who have been in that area for that length of time can be traced forward as well as backward using the PRs, MIs and wills. Trouble is few of the Garlicks seem to have left wills so whilst there is every likelihood that family groupings link up the proof is hard to find.

Best of luck  :)

The fact that they were Catholic may have led them to be a little more secretive than usual !

Some of the families were Catholic but by no means all. Frek's line for instance - I see the bpt was at St Mary's Independent, the oldest Independent church in the area.

Graham is aware that I have a Garlick connection,my maternal great grandmother being Martha Garlick Hadfield.
Martha married Joseph Wyatt from Glossop in 1863.They came to Australia.
There is a strong Garlick connection.
