Would this describe the entrance?

"The neo-Palladian house, refaced in Portland stone in the 20th century, has a rusticated ground floor with a broad flight of steps leading up to a bold Corinthian portico. "

Its Gorhambury House very near St Albans.. trying to find a picture

Scrub that, just found it and don't think thats it.
I looked at that one as well... In fact I've looked at every "Houses in Hertfordshire" listed on Wikipedia and quite a few others as well

Please acknowledge when a restorer works on your photos, it can take hours for them to work their magic

Please scan at 300dpi minimum to help save the restorers eyesight.

The Georgian building looks similar (only a 4 pilaster column entrance though... but by the time of the photo that had been Gothicised beyond recognition

We are assuming its somewher near St Albans because of the wording on the carts, but supposing they came from St Albans over the county boundary, and this house is actually in the next county ?  (Whatever that is !)

Luton Hoo looks very similar.. If the windows were only smaller...
but the wreath like roundels inside the porch.. and the porch look very like!

The long windows and mansard roof are a big problem though :(

you might want to have a look at Mathew Becketts site  with regards to the lost heritage of England. This site has pictures and information on the the country seats which have disappeared over the years. It is not complete in parts but as it is an on going project but you might find it on there.

I am having trouble getting the link to work but if you google for "lost heritage/ a memorial to the lost country houses of England" it should come up

It IS Luton Hoo... The portico was added in the 19th c and the mansard roof and remodelled windows in the very early 20th C

http://www.britainexpress.com/counties/bedfordshire/luton-hoo.htm

Little of Adams' work remains, as the house that he built was destroyed by fire in 1843. Robert Smirke was responsible for rebuilding the house and adding a grand entrance portico. Later still, a mansard roof was added by Mewes and Davis, architects of the Ritz Hotel.

20th century
Wernher had the interior remodelled in the early 20th century by the architects of the Ritz Hotel, Charles Mewes and Arthur Davis (architect). It was at this time that the mansard roof was added, in order to increase the amount of staff accommodation. This alteration, coupled with the newly installed casement windows was in the Second Empire style of architecture.
