Hi Stewart,
apologies for the delay in replying - work interfering with research, I'm afraid!
Thanks for your reply.
The information I have on the Lanot family is as follows:
Emily Eliza Lanot married my Great Great Grandfather, John Hill (61st Regiment of Foot at the time of marriage) in St Helier, Jersey on 20 April 1864. The marriage certificate gives her place of birth as St Helier and her father as Maurice.
I have found Emily Lanot on the 1861 census. She is shown as being a servant (house maid) at 21 Martin Road, the home address of one Thomas Waddy. Emily is shown as being born in France. There are no other Lanots to be found on the 1861 census.
I also have the Lanot family on the 1851 census listed as follows:
Maurice Lanot age 34, ag labourer, born France
Jeanne Lanot age 35, born France
Amilie Lanot - daughter, age 9, born France
Jean Lanot - son, age 4, born Jersey St Saviour
Pauline Lanot - Daughter, age 3, born Jersey St Saviour
All are shown living at 89, but no street name is available.
In earlier times, was Jersey classed as France for birth purposes, or is it possible that the Lanot travelled to Jersey from France sometime between 1842 (birth of Amilie/Emily) and 1847 (birth of Jean)?
I would be grateful for any help you may be able to offer Stewart.
As an aside, it is interesting that your username is the same as my Great Great Grandfather's surname!
Many thanks,
Thudders
