Middle name of Corscaden
« on: Sunday 04 November 07 18:57 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help with the parents of Mary Corscaden Shelton, born in the March quarter of 1852 Whitechapel.
She married in the March quarter of 1879 at Holborn to Harold Godwin Smith.

Jean

Curiouser and curiouser!!

The Corscaden name comes from the Donegal / Derry area of Ireland!!

Thank you - that's given me another track to go down.

Hmm - looked up the marriage on FreeBMD, and came up with the unexpected entry Q4 1872 Pancras 1a 314 (ie the year after the census entry)

Jabez Charles Shelton
to either
Mary Rebecca Coaten or Alice Beech.

I would guess that Mary's mother was Sarah Corscaden.

I've found them in the 1861 Census - all the same info (same address), except that Jabez is described as an upholsterer.

What happened to Sarah after the 1871 census? Did she die straight away? and then Jabez re-married in the last quarter of 1872?

And I found (also on FreeBMD):

Births Sep 1848
~~~~~~~~
SHELTON  Jabez Charles    Peterbro  15 332
Ummm - beats me!   ;)
You'd have thought with a name like that, this would be simple!
It does look as if he remarried straight away.
My guess would be that Jabez Charles b. 1848 was a son, and he died before Jabez b. 1862 was born.  Or maybe he's a brother's child.
This is where you need to consider buying certificates and gambling they are your family!
And if you do, please let us know what they say! I'm intrigued now.  ;D
