a strangers act of kindness
« on: Monday 05 November 07 09:22 GMT (UK) »
hi
i received this information this weekend from
a cousin who has made contact with me via rootschat.
up until now i have had hardly any information about their lives
in 1910 my grandparents were in hightown cheetham hill
manchester living in extreme poverty. they were young and
from ireland. they had a little girl and a baby. the little girl died
and because they were so poor couldn't afford to bury here.
a jewish man called at their home for a fitting of a suit
and inquired what the box was in the corner of the room to which they explained. my grandparents were catholics.
the following day the gentle man returned with enough money to
bury their little girl and to get them back home to ireland which they did.
i have no idea if i will be able to find the little girls death cert but would
love to find her grave.
i wonder if my grandparents ever had contact with the man again who
without his amazing act of kindness helping a struggling family i wouldnt
be writing this today!!

hi
opinions please
i believe the little girl may
have been called philomena
on free bmd i have found a death
for a philomena cohen ( my grandparents were o'shea)
in manchester 1911
that sounds like a very bizarre name combination to
me so do you think i should check this further?

That's certainly interesting. Cohen is a quite common Jewish surname. Could the child have been given the surname because it was the name of the person who paid for the funeral?

Wow, what a lovely story. That is so sweet. :)
The name of the girl sounds intriguing. I would definately check it out.
