Thomas CARTER - St. Albans - Copyhold land
« on: Monday 05 November 07 12:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have a Thomas Carter - who died on 19th January, 1846. He was living in Snatchup's Alley in St. Albans (St. Peter's). As I understand it these cottages were Copyhold - he certainly was paying "Scot and Lot" as his votes are registered in the Poll books.

I have had a quick chat with HALS and they say that they have a record for 1860 for "New Lane Squilllers" manor (his children were living there at least until 1871). Nothing else though.

I understand the land was sold to the Duchess of Marlborough in the early 18th century. Would the manorial registers be kept elsewhere ? National Archives or Wiltshire Archives ?

Does anyone know any more? It would save me a journey if someone believes the records do not exist in sufficient detail to help me find more information.

Many thanks in advance

Andrew
