Hi Again, and many thanks again to you both!

The Wollaston parish burial records for 8 Nov 1754 show Mercy wife of Charles Wright. There's no record of the marriage in the Northants marriage index so this led me to believe that it might have taken place in Beds.

I must admit, the William and Ann angle is a path i'm going down to determine whether or not they're related to Charles. I don't know for definite either way. The Wright family seem to have a history of hasty marriages with children following very soon after ;)

On that basis Charles could have married in his late teens or early twenties and still be their son. I think the other factor that draws me to them is that the Northants Archivist has said she can't find a record of any Wright family in Wollaston around 1720-1730 and this is the first record she has found. Obviously this may be purely coincidental but i'd like to know for sure!!

I haven't found anything as yet on the IGI but I also haven't considered variations in spelling i.e. Mary, Right etc. So I guess that's my next move.

Cheers

Matt

On the IGI a search against Wright will also pick up Right and Write

Are there any baptisms in Wollaston following the 1730 marriage?

Hi

The blars site looks interesting and the combined search might be helpful lthough I think my ancestors may have been a bit too lowly to be formally recorded somewhere. Might have a few court appearances though :D

There aren't any baptisms following the 1730 marriage which may well cut off the William and Ann link although I still need to find where Charles came from and hopefully build the line back from there.

I saw a few of the responses - have you asked about Wills yet [that must be the first thing to do surerly]?  Ask about both names when you email...Northants - and even Bedfordshire [although Wollaston is certainly NOT in Bedfordshire]

Bedfordshire: Worker [Flitton]; Ames [Kempston]; Manton [Kempston]; Morris [?]; Valentine [Kempston]; Two & Osborn [Cranfield]

Herfordshire and West London: Brown [Kent in early 19th C]; Blackwell.

The Northamptonshire Marriage Index has

Charles WRIGHT of this parish to Mercy TAYLOR of this parish
at Wollaston 14th Nov 1751

To be listed in the 1762 militia list Charles would be no older than 45, so born 1717 or later.

Matt

Beds Archives site is not quite complete so it is worth looking through the ''A2A'' site both in Northants and Bedfordshire - click on there and you will see what I mean.

I think those LOVELLs were Northants before 18th/19th C though I havent got back that far with the ones I am looking for ...they had bits of farm land and so forth... and LOVELL was spelt a number of ways as you can well imagine  ::)

People usualy married in the bride's parish - but that isn't a hard and fast rule?

If they were under age/or widows/widowers they may have married by licence [rather than having to wait for the banns to be read] and that may be something to research also?

Hi

Marilyn - thanks so much for finding the marriage to Mercy. For some reason the Northants archivist couldn't find the record so I assumed it didn't exist ::) At last I have a maiden name for her and a marriage date!

Cathy - thanks for the A2A hint, i've had a dig around and nothing has immediately sprung up but i'll keep searching. I'm beginning to think the Lovell connection with Melchbourne might be a red herring. I'm also wondering if the archivist didn't find Charles' marriage to Mercy, then maybe Charles' birth was also overlooked and the answer I seek is actually in Northants.

Interesting, intriguing and irritating this family research lark isn't it?

Cheers

Matt
