Help with Place Name in Hadingtonshire
« on: Tuesday 06 November 07 16:56 GMT (UK) »
I have just found an 1851 census entry on Scotlands People for John Ramage but cannot make out the "where born" other than I think the first part definitely says Hadingtonshire.  Could it be Dirleton or am I being fanciful?

In the 1841 census this person got a "yes" for coming from Midlothian - their residence was Edinburgh at the time so I am a little confused with this.

Any help really would be appreciated.

Just realised.  It is Temple.

Hi Linda,

Yes -  Dirleton is on the B1345, 4 miles from North Berwick.

I was also going to say Saltoun, which is just south-east of Haddington. But now Dirleton is mentioned, yes, looks like it. ;D

Sorry not sure which message this will attach to so will reply to both Daval57 and Isles together.  Still a Newbie in here.

The place below is definitely Midlothian Temple, but can't make out the one above at all. I put both in the clip so as not to lose the tail on the g.

I know Dirleton and visited there back in July - got soaked to the skin wandering the graveyard (as you do LOL).   :)

Thanks both

Ah, I was looking at wrong word.
Agree the top line is Dirleton, bottom line Temple.

Thanks Hume and Daval57 for confirming my wild guess.

Just been on the IGI and only one Ramage birth in the batch he would be in and unless he was Marion and decided to change his name to John I am still no further forward. Never mind have learned a lot about this man in the past 2 days and think he is husbands 4x great grandfather.

I have also learned how to post an image up on rootschat  :)

Just as an aside and for your amusement.

I just checked that census entry on Ancestry and found their transcription to be "Hadingtonshire, Bulla"

Well John was a Cowfeeder so I guess that fits LOL!

Bulla is appropriate as you say Linda  ;D

I was looking at the names you are researching and see Runciman.
No direct relationship to me but I have details of the marriage of Agnes Runciman  from Dunbar, Haddingtonshire.  Married 1816 to George Fortune.

Wondered, since the marriage was in the area you are looking at, whether this marriage is of interest to you?

My interest was the Fortune side so have done no research on Agnes Runciman.
