Lookup: Maine Families in 1790
« on: Wednesday 07 November 07 00:17 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have access to:  Maine Families in 1790?

If so, I would appreciate a lookup of John Ware on page 293 of volume 1.

Hi there

Unfortunately I don't own any of the series so don't have immediate access....but hopefully some time before Christmas I'll be at the Portland library and can have a look at their inhouse set.

If you get a better offer just let me know.....if not....anything in particular you're looking for?...or just a photocopy of page 293??

Best wishes
Jean

Thanks for the offer; I can wait, but will let you know if someone else can do the lookup before then.

I am interested in any information on John Ware of Topsham and later Litchfield, Maine.  The surname is also variously written as:  Wares, Waire, Wire. Wier, Wyer, Wyre and possibly Weare.  I especially want to know if he was born in Massachusetts and who his parents were.

Hi again

Not sure if you have this.  I found an online index that connects those folks in the Maine Families Series to the location on the 1790 census....
http://www.rootsweb.com/~megs/Vol1to9index.pdf

this is the entry for the John Ware you expressed interest in.

Head of Household: Ware, John (see Wire)
1790 Maine census enumeration statistics 1-4-2
Census location: Bowdoin
Maine Families Vol and page 1:293
Census page 34

Best wishes
Jean

Thanks!  I have seen that and I've looked at that census page on Ancestry where he seems to be the top most individual on the page and it is so washed out that you can't read his name.  It is probably the right person, though I would have expected to see him in Litchfield in 1790.

John Ware served in the army from Topsham during the Revolutionary War and then returned and married Mary Mallett in 1780.  According to the History of Litchfield he was in that town before 1800.  All of his children, starting in 1781, were supposedly born in Litchfield.  His son David lists his father as born in Massachusetts [1880 census].

Hi again

Lookup is completed...but sadly there is no breaking news to report  :(

The book and page you cited gives no more info than you already have....it  says John Ware was b. ca 1757 and d. 26 Feb 1826, Litchfield.....it also mentions that his son David states in 1880 census that his father was b. in MA.

As for the location of Bowdoin on the 1790 census as opposed to Litchfield....as nearly as I can discern Litchfield may have been created from a portion of Bowdoin or at least is adjacent to it.  Perhaps John never moved but it was his town line or county line that did.  The Fogler Libary at USM shows alot of changes in that area from their census  database  http://www.library.umaine.edu/census/memaps.htm

I wish there were more!

Best wishes

Thanks for trying, JJ.  I guess IŽll have to keep digging around in Massachusetts for possible parents.
