1891 Census Corwen - James
« on: Wednesday 29 December 04 13:13 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to locate my gggrandfather on the 1891 census.  His name was Richard James (age 43) and he was either a woodman or a railway guard.  He had at least two sons John (18) and Robert (20) and possibly some daughters.  From information I've received from the 1871 census I think he was living in the Corwen area (possibly Glyndyfrdwy).  He was married at that time to Margaret, but I believe he may have remarried an Elizabeth as I can find no record on the 1881 Census of him with a wife called Margaret.

Many thanks.

It looks as though this is his remarriage: :)

Name Year Quarter District County Volume Page

James, Richard 1876 June Corwen Denbighshire Merionethshire 11b 667
Owen, Elizabeth 1876 June Corwen Denbighshire Merionethshire 11b 667

The 1881 census has him living at Corwen 43 Railway Guard, Elizabeth 29 Wife, both of them speaking both languages - Anne 13, Phebe 12, Stephen 9, Elizabeth 4, Mayenet [!] 1 - all speaking Welsh only which was pretty smart of the one year old. ;D

Have a Happy New Year.

Thank you so much for the information Iria, it links in very nicely with what I have already discovered.  Richard definitely appears to have married at least twice.  On freebmd I have found his marriage to Margaret and her death, his marriage to Elizabeth and her death and on the 1901 census he's living with a lady called Mary but I haven't discovered their marriage yet.  I might send for Margaret's death certificate just to make sure we haven't got a bluebeard in the family!

Thanks again.  Have a great New Year.

I am researching a house in Corwen called Ffynnon Sulien. There was a Richard James who rented ( I think ) the house and farm in 1910 after he retired aged 61. He was a goods guard one the railway, had been married 3 times, was a sunday school teacher at Corwen Baptist Church, was born in Glyndyfrdwy and died in 1917 aged 68.
