Click here to read about the development of Portlaw by Richard Curtis, Rev. John Thomas Medleycott and the Malcomson family who arrived in Ulster from Scotland around 1660. When David Malcolmson was born the family were settled in Lurgan, Co. Armagh. They proceeded to develop business interests in both Co. Tipperary and Co. Waterford.

For over 150 years the boys and girls of Portlaw went to separate schools. In 1991 the Sisters of Mercy, who had been directly involved in the education of the girls of Portlaw for over a century, vacated their school in the village. The result of this was the amalgamation of the Boys National School and the Convent School. Click here to see the website of Portlaw National School.

There's some more information about the Malcolmson family in Irish Quaker Firms on The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in Ireland website.
