Help requested - relevant to Remembrance Day
« on: Friday 09 November 07 09:19 GMT (UK) »
I have tried to improve the amount of information that is available on the men of my village who died in the world wars, but one name has eluded me. He is Stanley Aves, KIA in 1918. There are two possible Stanley Aves that might fit - the most likely is Stanley Charles Aves, birth registered in Newmarket in Q1/1899 and the other being Stanley Aves birth registered in Cambridge in Q4/1893. Could some kind soul let me know if they can find any information about the parents and family of these Stanleys? There are still Aves in the village, but the two 75 year old twin brothers I have spoken to know nothing of Stanley.

Many thanks
Nick

thanks for that, I think you have the right one there - FreeBMD gives Matthew Aves marrying Mary Jane Houghton in 1897, so it looks like Stanley was with grandparents for census night, rather than for any more obscure reason.

Best wishes

Hi Nick

They seem to be the only 2 who I see on the census - I was thinking born 1899 was a little late to be joining up - but folks did lie. I assume he is the S Aves of unknown age on the CWGC site - I am used to the Australian records (which have full war service details) - would his service number as on the CWGC give access to any war service records in England?

Trish,

Stanley was KIA in 1918 aged 19 - have you got dates mixed up (or more embarrassingly, have I)?

Ricky

Would love a bit more help. Matthew (Stanley's dad) was the son of William Aves, but the twins I mentioned are descended from a Josiah Aves. I would love to know if Josiah and William were brothers - they were certainly related as Matthew Aves is a witness at the wedding of one of Josiah's clan. I have the parish records, but suspect the Aves may have been Free Church, which was fairly strong in the village at the time, I am sure the twins would love to know exactly how they are related to Stanley,

Thanks
Nick

the village war memorial page has the following: Stanley Aves, private 59454 6th battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, KIA 29/9/1918. Born Isleham, enlisted Cambridge, buried Unicorn cemetery Vend'Huile, Aisne, France. I think that a bit more detail to commemorate him would be a good thing and have added quite a bit of detail for several others, so am keen to tie up this loose end if poss
