Ann Prescott born Newcastle
« on: Saturday 10 November 07 14:01 GMT (UK) »
I have a mystery that I need help resolving.

On the 1881 census, Sutton St Helens Lancashire I have ;

Alfred Jones head 30 born Welshpool
Ann Jones wife 50 born Woolhampton Berkshire
Ann Prescott Step daughter 10 born Northumberland Newcastle

On the 1891 census, Toxteth Park Liverpool;

Alfred Jones head 39 born Liverpool
Anne Jones 60 wife born Berkshire
Ann Prescott 20 daughter born Newcastle on Tyne

The problem is I don't know who Ann Prescott is.

Alfred Jones, single, married Ann Elliott, widow in Sutton Lancashire in 1877.
Ann had 2 daughters, Eliza Ann and Francis Olive. They were born in London and are on the 1861 census in St. James, Westminster.
I can't find them anywhere on the 1871 census. I also haven't found Ann Prescott born Newcastle in 1871.

Why is Ann Prescott given as stepdaughter and then daughter when I can't find a trace of any Prescotts in my family?
Did Ann Elliott go up to Newcastle and have a baby which she registered in the father's name? She would have been 42 in 1871.

I know that I have the right families in 1881 and 1891 as the other people living in the household are part of the family.

I would be really grateful for any help in finding out who Ann Prescott was.

Regards

Bonjour Tati,
Votre français est excellent.

Many thanks for looking.

So, that does look like my Ann.
The person taking down the info probably confused Wolverhampton with Woolhampton Berkshire, where Ann was born. There's no marriage to a Paul Prescott and as I said when she married Alfred Jones in 1877 she was Ann Elliott, widow.
I haven't found a death for Paul Prescott before 1877 so maybe Ann and Paul were just living together and she left for a younger man (Alfred was 20 years younger).

On the 1861 census Paul is a soldier in Devonport. Was he sent to Newcastle before he left the army?
I'll send for the birth Cert. for Annie Prescott to see who her mother was.

Merci ;D (Aidée un peu par le fait d'être en immersion totale permanente peut-être ;D ;D)

I can't see a marriage for Paul and Ann either  :)
