Yes I know:that's why I'd like to find out where the Dragoons were in 1871. He'd still be sufficiently young to be a soldier

WO 12/433 -which I think is the muster rolls of the 7th Dragoon Guards for 1858/59 , an entry is written next to his name to that effect.

Thought so. I think the Muster and Pay Books are the best series in Kew, if you have the time to track the man though his full service. Later ones even include marriage details. And they include every man who served unlike the service papers. They probably culled his papers 20 years after his death.
