St. Anthony's, Newcastle
« on: Thursday 15 November 07 16:56 GMT (UK) »
I have just received a marriage certificate (1874) which states that both the bride and groom's residence at the time of marriage was St. Anthony's, Newcastle. I've had a look to see if this was a workhouse but couldn't find anything. I thought it was unlikely to be anyway as the groom was employed as a Boilersmith at the time. I don't really think they would be resident at a church either! Any ideas anyone?

I would imagine it means that they were resident somewhere within the Parish of St Anthony's.

No, I don't think that's right . Perhaps it was a street name?

According to Ward's Directory of Newcastle-on-Tyne, 1890 (see http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/d.asp ) St Anthony's was a 'village' ..'about three miles east of Newcastle'.

Thanks for that Jennifer. I'm a North Easterner myself, although not a Geordie, but I've never heard of it. Had a look on Streetmap, it's next to the Walker Riverside Park, so looks like it's just part of Newcastle now. You live and learn!

St Anthony's is a community on the north bank of the River Tyne,  within the Ward of Walker, within The City of Newcastle.

In earlier times, Walker was one of the four "townships" of the Parish of Longbenton ( the other three were Longbenton itself, Weetslade and Killingworth) Then Walker became a parish in it's own right.

Up until 1936 this area lay within the Registration District of Tynemouth
( since then within Newcastle RD)

Trivia Angle....
Not so long ago there was a ferry across the Tyne from St Anthony's ( it juts out into the Tyne) over to Bill Quay in Felling.
