Occuptation
« on: Friday 16 November 07 23:24 GMT (UK) »
I've had a Family Tree sent to me by email. It's only a distant connection to my research.

However I'm rather curious as to what his occupation  was.
He was married in London in 1919 aged about 21 years.

His first child was born in 1920 in Baghdad. Other children were Born in
India, Germany and Sharratt (don't know where this is). He was back in England where another child was born in 1930.

I have tried contacting the person who sent me the tree, unfortunately I have not received a reply.
Just wondering if any RC has any ideas.

Curious - Sarra

Some sort of engineering work perhaps? My uncle's job took him, and family, to Pakistan, South America, Libya, etc.
Diplomatic service or civil service job?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you both for your suggestions -
I'm thinking perhaps something to do with the  Foregin Office diplomatic service but, then again I really have no idea.

Is there any way I can search On line from OZ for employees of the Diplomatic service?.

The Gazettes do list appointments to the Diplomatic Service although you will need some patience whilst looking

Mog,

Thank you for that link - I will try and work through it.

The person I am looking for is - Wilfred David BERRY born 1898, Cross Heath Staffordshire England.  He married 1919 Alton, Hampshire England.

Would appreciate it if anyone can find him.

Thanks
Sarra

Hi Sarra
I have taken a look at the Times Online but nothing has leapt out at me.
Shame you do not have the wedding certificate as that would give his occupation.
I think it was more likely he was in the army as I guess there were more in the army than the diplomatic service.
You can search the Chaplain Rolls for births in the army on the following site.  It is pay to view but you may find some of the births of the children you mentioned

Hi Sarra
It sounds like the Army to me.  The Anglo-Indian forces were still  in Mesopotamia in 1920, following their capture of Baghdad in 1917. I see on findmypast that a Frances M.J. Berry was born in Mesopotamia in 1920. (would this be one of his children?). This is an army record, but unfortunately does not specify the father's regiment.   Someone on the 'Armed Services' board may be able to tell you how to look up army records for that period and in that part of the world.

Mog,
Thanks for looking through the Times for me.  I did think of sending for the Marriage certificate but, it takes so long to receive them sometimes. I though I maybe able to satisfy my curiosity faster by posting on RC.  I have had so much help from people on RC.

Diana,
That is indeed one of his children - Frances Millicent Jane Berry.
So now I know he was in the Army. I will post on the Armed Services board and see if I can find any further information for him.

Many thanks to all for your help.

Sarra
