Elizabeth GRAY - 1835 Dundee
« on: Saturday 17 November 07 14:54 GMT (UK) »
Elizabeth GRAY was born or christened abt 7 Jun 1835 Dundee. She married James G MEREDITH on 4 Nov 1857 in Clinton County, Iowa, USA and died 30 Jan 1909 in Olmsted, Minnesota, USA.

Can anybody find proof of her birth, her parents (possibly John and Barbara) or her date of emigration? I have no UK census info on her.

The 1900 US Census states she went to the US in 1844.   Cannot locate her in Dundee in 1841 - 2 Elizabeth Grays but both still there in 1851.

Ah - I hadn't noticed that, although I do have an image of that census.

Thanks very much - maybe I can find her and her family on the immigration lists.

The reason I mentioned John and Barbara GRAY is that they're living next door in 1870 Pleasant Grove but, on looking closer, they're too young, John being 35 (and Elizabeth being 28). Maybe a brother . . .

Another researcher has Elizabeth's father as William. Apparently they spent time on the east coast of US before moving on to Minnesota.

Ancestry's 1841 Scotland index has an Angus-based William Gray aged 50 with a 6 year old Elisabeth (note spelling) but, as I don't have a subscription, I have no more detail.

I can't find any passenger lists for 1844 yet . . .

hi theevath

try freeCEN 1841 census site for angus(100%)
aberdeenshire 1841 & 1851 is well covered
other counties are partially covered, if at all
best of all it doesn't cost a penny

Thanks for that - throws up a couple of possibilities.

I'll get back to the original researcher and ask if she has any proof of the father's name being William.
