I have included the reg numbers, so you do not need to pay the extra .99c to find them.
Stella Jane PURCELL, birth reg Carlton, 1896 reg no: 18214
father: Patrick  Mother: Miriam COLEMAN

Joseph Henry SMITH birth 1862 - reg: 8016
Joseph henry SMITH, death, 1863 - reg:4101

I also looked, there is no marriage for Ann Lawson and Joseph Smith in the Pioneers cd, so I doubt that it will be found in the online index. I tried all ways of finding it using wildcards.

How did you get those as the names of his parents?

I am wondering if someone has thought that it was his birth, not realizing that the child appears to have died the next year.  It could be a co-incidence, but the registration place is the same.   If so, they must have had another child of the same name, whom they did not register.

I searched for the SMITH / PURCELL marriage up to 1913 - it may have took place in New Zealand.   Miriam also did not have any more children in Victoria up to that time.

Thanks ChristineR
My great grandfather was Joseph Henry Smith.
He emigrated to New Zealand some time after 1896 with Miriam Purcell.  Miriam Coleman married Patrick Purcell in 1891 in NSW, Australia, they had a child named Nellie A Purcell in 1893. Also Miriam Coleman had a child named Arthur in 1889. Father unknown. I have searched NZ records on our marriage CD and found no record of a marriage between Joseph Henry Smith and Miriam Purcell/ Coleman.

I also have no idea if Joseph Smith married Ann Lawson when they had their son Joseph Henry Smith in 1862.

Very confusing family

Eileen,

As ChristineR says - where did you get the names of your Joseph Henry SMITH's parents?
Where did you get a precise birthdate for him?  Do you have his death certificate?  Does this give his age, his birthplace and the names of his parents?

Without some such confirmation, it would be very risky to assume that Joseph Henry SMITH b 1862 in Vic is yours - given that there is what seems to be the death of this Joseph Henry SMITH aged 1 in 1863 in Vic (only 'problem' being that the given name of the mother is listed as Ann on birth entry, and Eliza Ann on death entry).

Here is another Joseph SMITH/Ann LAWSON person for interest/completeness:
*1883 - Elizabeth Ann HENNET, parents Joseph SMITH & Ann LAWSON, died at East Hill, Vic, age 26, 1883, #8040

Working backwards ....
*1879 - Arthur James HENNET born Emer, Vic, father Albert, mother Elizabeth Ann SMITH, 1879 #9062

*1877 - Elizabeth Ann SMITH (born Manchester) married Albert HENNET (born Murrumbidgee) in Vic in 1877 #2070

*1841 - Joseph SMITH married Ann LAWSON, Manchester Cathedral, Lancashire, 31 Jan 1841
(The marriage is also on FreeBMD)

Joseph SMITH is a common name; Ann LAWSON also ...

It really would be helpful if you would tell us what documented information you have about your Joseph Henry SMITH  :)

Regards,

JAP

Hi, I got the names of his parents from my uncle who lives in Auckland, New Zealand.  I will have to do a search for his WW1 record that I have misplaced.

Also Joseph Henry Smith and Miriam Purcell/Coleman emigrated from Tasmania in February 1903.

When I find out the info on his WW1 record or find his death transcription I will get back to you.

Hi Eileen,

I think it's best if we now wait for you to come back with his WW1 record (as Jenn implies, a Joseph in his 50s would not seem to be a very likely candidate for service in WW1  ;) ).  But, if he was a cook and based in NZ perhaps ...

Also his death certificate/transcription.
Ones I have from NZ are extremely informative.

Regards,

JAP

Hi, I have found his WW1 record which says his date of birth was 23/8/1868 in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. He died in Whangarei Hospital on 24/8/1941 and is buried in Kauri Cemetery.  His cause of death was Chronic Myocarditis.

It says that he married Miriam/Minnie Coleman on August 1891 in South Melbourne by the Rev Murdock. but that can not be true as Miriam married Patrick Purcell on 14 Jan 1891 in Clareval, near Stroud, NSW, Australia. I will have to get in touch with my uncle to see if his death certificate mentions his parents or not.
