Rev Mr Dawson Castlecomer
« on: Monday 19 November 07 00:48 GMT (UK) »
I have a document stating my ancestor Eleanor McNamara was known to the Rev Mr Dawson Castle Comer. This was around 1820's.

Can someone help me in finding out what church Rev Dawson would have been at.

Eleanor married Patrick McNamara before 1820's. I assume they  married in a C of E church?

Regards
Kathryn

Hi Kathryn

I wonder in capacity Eleanor was known to Rev DAWSON..........?

This may be a long shot .......a well known Rev DAWSON died in Castlecomer 1840, but he was Dean of St Patricks Dublin and is buried in that Cathedral.....

I can't get the actual page to load up, but this is the Googled index:
http://shrinkalink.com/19813
1841 Gentlemans Magazine
At Castlecomer, co. Kilkenny, of typhus fever, the Very Rev. Henry Richard Dawson, MA of Ox- lord, Dean of St. Patrick's cathedral, Dublin

This page has a photo of his Statue at St Patricks
http://www.webshots.com/search?query=Richard+Dawson
Ingtriguing set of photos there not sure of the theme  ;D, but there is one of his statue and another of a portion of the plaque.

This page has photo's of his "Priest's medal, a bust of his head etc
http://shrinkalink.com/19815

This page has his genealogy:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/dawson/messages/2777.html

Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deans_of_St._Patrick's_Cathedral,_Dublin
Says he was Dean of St Patricks 1828 to 1840

and this again, has a photo of his statue, on the ST Patricks website:
http://www.stpatrickscathedral.ie/t6.htm

It may be worth contacting St Patricks via their website, to see if they know of earlier connection to Castlecomer, prior to his Deanship?

Cheers

Hi again...

Oooh, this looks promising!

http://www.clogh.com/colliery_church.htm

It's about the Colliery Church of Clogh , Anglican (Church of Ireland) - it was consecrated 1829, and prior to that time St. Mary's Church Castlecomer, 3 miles away, was the nearest place of Worship for the  congregation (I think I saw another website referring to Rev DAWSON visiting Castlecomer, a poor mining town)

The same Henry Richard DAWSON was Rector "there" (not sure if it refers to Colliery Church or St Marys?), prior to his Deanship at St Patricks. He was age 48 when he died in 1840. There is also a bust of him at this church AND a marble memorial in St Mary's in Castlecomer!!

And a current website - you can contact the current Rector of St Mary's  ;D
http://www.cashel.anglican.org/castlecomer.shtm

How exciting! I think the long-shot has shortened some  ;D

Cheers

Hi Ambly

Eleanor McNamara (Murphy) was listed as being known to Rev Dawson on her papers to come to Australia.

Her husband Patrick was a convict sent out in 1823. So she must have known Rev Dawson before this time.

She came out on the Sir Joseph Banks ship with her children.

They would have been married 1820's approx in Castlecomer

I will look at all you have listed and try to find out when they married and where
