Janice and J.J.

Thanks a million to both of you.  This is great.

I knew a little about a Nfndlnd connection but had not got beyond
family legend so had nothing to bring up here.

This helps a lot.

J.J.

I forgot to say that I had noticed the immigration date in the census. I took that to mean that Newfoundland was not part of Canada at that time, so anyone moving from Newfoundland to (say) Quebec would be an immigrant.

Is this right?

By the way, I'm still wandering through all the sites you and Janice sent. I feel like a kid in a candy store!!  It's great!!

Thanks again.

Rob. :) :) :) :)

I have quite a bit of info on the Pasher family, at least on the Cape Breton/Newfoundland lines.  I was able to trace back Robert Samuel Pasher and Elizabeth Matthews to the Newfoundland line.  I don't have much on their descendants, but here's link to my family tree online, starting at the page of Robert and Elizabeth's son, Robert Charles Pasher, born in Montreal in 1901:

Hope you find the info here helpful.

Regards,
Laurie

From "Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland", Seary 1977:

"Pasha, Pasher, ? Newfoundland variants of the surname of the Channel Islands Perchard.  Early instance: Charles Parshar, servant of Clowns Cove (Carbonear), 1820 (vital statistics).  Modern status: rare, at Corner Brook and Harbour Grace."

There are also Perchards in Newfoundland, the Seary entry for this name also notes it is a Channel Island name, possibly a variant of Perchaud.  There are early instances of Perchards in Newfoundland going back to the 18th century.
