That looks very likely, Helen. Thank you.
I was thrown for a minute by dates not tying in.
If William was 43 on the 1861 census, it could very well be them.
When I looked at the 1841 census, their ages would have been 15, but am I right in thinking that on that census the ages were rounded to the nearest 5?

I'm interested in what a coffee roaster did. Would he have a little trolley or stall in the street, or work in a shop? Does anyone know?

Pilgrim Street is one of the oldest streets in Newcastle - leading North from the Tyne
Thanks again to all my helpers on Rootschat.

Funny coincidence

There is a christening of Margaret, child of Michael and Isabella Chicken on the 2 1 1831.(Longbenton Register of Baptisms 1830-37)
Quite a few other entries from other Chickens.
There can't be many Isabella Chickens about!

Hi Liz

In 1841 if the enumerator followed instructions ages over 15yrs were rounded down to the nearest 5.  The ages of both William and Isabella were recorded as 20 and therefore could be anything between 20 and 24.

Ages on the other Census for both William and Isabella are consistent and give birth years of about 1818, give or take a year.

If you get a birth certificate for any of their children you will get the mother's maiden name and only then can you be certain of that marriage.

Regards

Helen K

That's helped a lot knowing that ages were rounded DOWN.
I wonder why that was -  in a time when life expectancy was so much shorter than ours . . . .
The more I go into our pasts, the more questions are thrown up.

Thank, Helen
