Thanks very much to you all for your help and information. Could anyone do me a colour version of the photo please. Also, can anyone please tell me what the crossed rifles signify on the left sleeve of his uniform?

Many thanks. ::)

Late entry, just came across this.
Crossed rifles would, I think, normally signify a marksman's award.
Sniper perhaps or a member of regimental shooting team(guessing here).

Think the chevrons pointing up, worn on the left arm just above the cuff denotes 18 years service.

Hello again,

My grandmother's husband (shown with her in the photograph) was only 10 months old when his father, also named Henry James Vincent, died. I have a copy of his death certificate confirming that he died on 6th December 1872 in North Curry, Somerset, at the age of 27. The cause of death was 'fracture of skull by falling from a donkey - accident'. It also states on the certificate that an inquest into his cause of death was held on 11th December, 1872.  I am obviously very curious, as this seems an unusual cause of death. On the 1871 Census for Curry Mallet, Somerset, his occupation is 'Quarry man'. Could this accident have happened whilst he was working? Would his death have been mentioned in any local newspaper at that time, e.g. Taunton? Can anyone please help or tell me how I could find out?

Hi
If you look on the RWF Forum by google search there is an article and photo on there of a chap with a marksman in uniform, this may help cross reference some information

use this link http://www.rwf-forum.co.uk/vBulletin/showthread.php?t=4020&highlight=marksman but if it doesnt work register free then look under military genealogy heading and then look for Colour Sergeant Thomas Roberts born 1870/Photo Info.

It not a million miles away from your enquiry too.
regards Gareth
