What to do now?
« on: Thursday 22 November 07 15:28 GMT (UK) »
Good afternoon

I'm now at a stage where I'm a bit stuck until I can visit the Records Offices for a couple of places. As I can't decorate all the time at home I was wondering if there was any way I could give something back. Over the past few months I've received great help from lots of people, so the question:-

What could I do? I think I could help transcribe something possibly but what, I have access to computers at home and work , and could probably offer a few hours a week. I believe FreeBMD need help and presume so do others.

I'd appreciate any opinions please :D :D

Thanks

Ian

Hi Ian,

Is there a family history society near you ?  If so they might appreciate help in transcribing gravestones or compiling lists etc.,  A few years ago the members of the Aberdeen & NE Scotland Society transcribed the 1881 Census of Aberdeenshire.
Another project was transcribing the mortcloth entries/burials recorded in the Parish Registers.  Currently, there is an ongoing project to record the memorial inscriptions of all the kirkyards in the County but as there are 95 parishes it may take a little time  ;D ;D

Hi Ian

FreeBMD & FreeCEN would be glad to welcome you as a volunteer transcriber.  You do as little or as much as you wan to - it all helps to make the records freely available.

PM with your e-mail address if you'd like more details about FreeCEN

Cheers

Ian,

Also check out the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness site. I have signed up on that and helped some people there.

And good for you.
I hadn't done it before because I thought I work and have 2 young kids, who has the time, until I met another Rootschatter at a get-together who was volunteering for the Italian Genealogical site here in the states. She too has a job and a family and she said it was just a few hours a week, so I did, and I've done a few projects for them now and I feel so good giving back, especially to them because their site has given me so much.

Also check the threads on here that might pertain to you. When I had my Ancestry subscription, I was on the USA boards all the time looking things up for people.

Kath

I've check out the site but unfortunately I don't think it's right for me at the time. I work shifts and wouldn't be able to get to different places i.e. records offices etc in the UK with a good level of reliance. The computer based look-up's etc is a much better platform for me.  :)

Thanks for the suggestion

Cheers
