The GRO Deaths at sea index is online at Findmypast

http://www.findmypast.com/BirthsMarriagesDeaths.jsp

The dates can be misleading. I've got a death certificate where my relative died December 1877, but wasn't registered until September 1878.
Cornwall: Allen, Bevan, Bosisto, Carnpezzack, Donithorn, Huddy, James, Retallack, Russell, Vincent, Yeoman

Thank you everyone for all your help and encouragement. Every time I read a post on RC I find something new and it is the most valuable source of how to do research  ;D ;D ;D

Sorry I can't count  ;D Charles was my OH's GGGF not GGF  :P

I have only found Charles O'Neill in person on the 1871 English census. He is living in Liverpool with his wife Emily Mary at his MIL's. His MIL is a Mary A. Bates (transcribed in Ancestry as Bater) It gives his age as 25 so he was born around 1846 and it indicates that he was born in Dublin, Ireland.

After that he's a no show. In 1881 Emily is married, alone with her children and is described as a "Master Mariner's wife". So he's still alive away at sea I guess.

Then in 1891 she is a widow.

Thanks again for all your help and information.

added later: the youngest child on the 1891 census is 10 years old born about 1881

That number 81339 is the ship's official number. I googled around and found this website.

http://www.miramarshipindex.org.nz/

Did a query and it looks like the ship sunk. They left New York January 24, 1882 for the Tyne.

Glad that number was correct. The 8 in the hand-written record was less than clear. The loss of the ship explains the lack of cause of death, but at least you know now.
