Place name

According to the 1861 census for London my g/g/mother was born in a place called Stantell in Cornwall.
Does anyone know of where this could be please.

Hi
Could it be St Austell which has been mis-subscribed?

Hi Baj,

I think Sharpie may be right although I will agree the entry does look like Stantell/ St Antell - but then the enumerator does spell Cornwall with an e Cornewall. What was Mary Ann's maiden name? Perhaps we can confirm it.

St Austell does get mis-spelt on by "foreign" enumerators.  A friend found her grandparents' birth place listed as Torsell when they were living in Wales.  Just how they would have pronounced it I expect.

Thanks Ellen.
It does seem to be a misspelling .

Hi everyone ... :)

It definitely looks like St Austell to me. The strange thing is , is that I cannot find a birth for Mary Ann Wyatt b c 1838 in St Austell ot Truro. In 1871 she states Cornwall as POB , where is she in 1851 and 1841?

Baj, what was her father's name and occupation on her marriage cert? Or have you found her birth registration already ....

Deb, on the hunt as always  ;D
Travellers = Penfold, Orchard, James
Devon = Middleton,  Waterfield, Adams, Clark/e, Gould
Cornwall = Palmer, Carnarton, Slack/Smith. Morris/h
Wales, New Quay = James, Evans

Hi again Baj and hi Ellen and Deb,

I spent many hours looking for it. I found the possible marriage listing 2 possible wives as Mary Ann but had no idea which one was right. Looking at Wyatt or Jacobs like Deb I could find nothing in Cornwall for St Austell. Now once you mentioned it was Wyatt, I tried again. I will list what my discoveries were and hope you can make something of it.  ;)

I can not locate Mary Ann Wyatt born in St Austell anywhere.

There are two Mary's born elsewhere in Cornwall about the right time but both are still in Cornwall in 1861 so not the right one.

Next I noted in the 1861 census for Marylebone we also have a John G Wyatt aged 26 b St Austell (His birth is clearly listed St Austell - still think hers looks like St Antell (n/u is common but I dont see an s) but like Ellen, I too have seen many strange interpretations of this parish enumerated from outside of Cornwall.) John is living with his wife and child in 1861.

John Goodfellow WYATT born 28 May 1834, baptised 7 Aug 1836 St Austell parents William and Mary
Baptised the same day was Esther Mary WYATT 7 Aug 1836 parents William and Mary
No sign of Mary.

Well now wasn't having any luck with a marriage until I found this (Love the spelling)

John WIET = Mary Ann GOODFELLOW 10 Aug 1822 Blisland  ;)

So back to the drawing board and I still couldn't find them (concentrating my hunt to Cornwall and Middlesex) When I eventually looked beyond this I found something interesting

1841 census

HO107/376/3 Folio 6 Page 7
Spring Street
Bedminster
Somerset

WYATT William 30 N Mason J
WYATT Mary 30 N
WYATT John 7 N
WYATT Esther 5 N
WYATT Mary 3 Y
WYATT Ellen 8 Months y
WYATT William 21 N Mason J
TRISTIAL Stephen 22 (Y or N not listed) Mason J
WILLMOT Jane 16 Y FS

I was quite chuffed with this except if the date of marriage I found is transcribed correctly 1822 does not seem right for this couple 1832 would be much better. I particularly liked the wife Mary Ann Goodfellow (besides the spelling of Wyatt of course  ;D )
Also Mary b Somerset  :-\

I had another look for 1851 without any joy but by then it was very, very late indeed so I left posting till this morn and so off to bed I went  ::)

Back on the hunt. What else does the cert tell us Baj - Father Name and Occupation - witnesses?

Cheers Kris  :D

Hi Kris ;D

Coulds Mary ann Wyatt have been born in Cornwall and yet registered in Middlesex , St Lukes?  There is a Mary Ann Wyatt June q 1838, St Lukes. The only other possibles are for St Germans...i rechecked the transcription for 1861 and it's def. St Austell ...cannot make it look like St Germans even LOL  :-\ :P

deb

Added  I have looked using one name searches ... hoping they would be under Hyatt or something similar .... what about White?=wyatt
