Hi Ev

Have found a James Tyrie death in South Shields 1890 aged 71 - could be the right one as his sons all moved to South Shields. Also a James Tyrie was born in Airlie, Angus on 31/10/1818.

We also have Peter and Susan - we wondered if Susan could call herself Jessie but the ages in the census don't quite match with those of Susan in the earlier census.

Going to take abit of sorting we think!!

There are some LDS submissions in the IGI which might give a pointer?

The submissions show the parents as Peter TYRIE (once as Peter Murray TYRIE) & Susan (once as Susan BROWN).

But unfortunately I can't find a TYRIE-BROWN marriage in the IGI, on SP or on FreeBMD.

Children listed in the LDS submissions are:
- James Murray ca 1868
- Jessie 1869
- Maggie Murray 1875
- Ernest Charles 1881 (LDS has birthdate as 24 Mar 1881, marriage to Alice SIMBLIT 16 Nov 1901 at St Marys, Gateshead, death as 19 Apr 1944; Alice's death as 22 Oct 1934)
- Williamina 1884 (this is actually an extracted record but one of those recent ones which have no source information - bap 13 Aug 1884, St James Gateshead, parents Peter TYRIE & Susan)
- Minnie ca 1886
all South Shields except Maggie who is given as Gateshead.

These pretty much match the 1881 census of:
Peter TYRIE, Head, 35, b Scotland, Wood Plaining Machinist (Woodturner)
Susan TYRIE, Wife, 31, b Scotland
James TYRIE, Son, 13 b South Shields, Unemployed
Jessie TYRIE, Dau, 11 b Newcastle, Northumberland, Scholar
Maggie TYRIE, Dau, 5, b South Shields, Scholar
Peter TYRIE, Son, 2, South Shields, Durham, England
Arnest TYRIE, Son, 1 m, b South Shields

And FreeBMD births (South Shields unless otherwise stated) of James TYRIE Sep qtr 1867, Jessie TYRIE Dec qtr 1869 (Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland), Margaret Murray TYRIE Sep qtr 1875, Peter Murray TYRIE Jun qtr 1879, Ernest Charles TYRIE Jun qtr 1881, Wilhelmina TYRIE Sep qtr 1885 (Gateshead).  I don't immediately see Minnie ... perhaps Minnie TWIVEY, Dec qtr 1884 (Gateshead).

The middle name of Murray could, of course, just be a co-incidence  :(
Is there a more precise birthplace in the 1871 census for Peter snr than just 'Scotland'?

Hi JAP

Thank you for the informtion. I was a way at the archives all day yesterday so was unable to get straight back to you.

Unfortunately there is no other place stated on the census than Scotland.

Going to Durham today for more research
