Hi,

I take it he married Margaret Holdsworth in 1850?  In the 1851 census they are living with the Holdsworths. He is aged 23 and born Heptonstalll Yorks.
1861 and 71 he says he was born Bradford, Yorks ??? .  His age tends to vary on all the census. By the way on one of the census he was a Machine Broker.

If you want the full transcripts let me know.
Just got to go and cook the tea.

Regards,
Mo

Hi

You should always include the info that the same message has been posted on another board to save duplication of effort

There does not appear to be any connection to Lancashire

1861 details shown in link to Lancs board

This is the 1871 entry for the same family - all b Bradford Yorks

James Smith 45  broker
Margaret   42
Arthur   2
Charlotte  10
Elizabeth A   7
Emily  19
Helen F   5
Polly   12
Sam   13
Selina   16

As I mentioned in my reply on the Lancs board

Quote
Marriages Dec 1850
Smith  James     Bradford Y.  23 340
Holdsworth  Margaret     Bradford Y  23 340

You need to buy a copy of their marriage certificate to establish his fathers name and occupation.  That may make tracing him on the 1841 census easier
