Very interested in the posts of JenB and pjbuk.  I do still think it is Opera Binder and they have given some plausible explanations for this weird occupation!!  ::) ::)

Hello Di

I think there is such a thing as an "Opera Slipper" - a light leather slipper (worn by gentlemen, whether to the Opera or not I don't know).
I have seen "Slipper Maker" as an occupation, so I guess a binder is quite likely  - binding was often a female occupation in the shoe industry

Yes MarieC I agree with you. My original post actually said that was what I thought it was but Tristan kindly changed it so everyone could make their own decision.
Thanks Tristan - it worked a treat  :-*

Thanks Steve for the idea about the Opera shoes. Somewhere in my dim dark distant past I recall that (must have been something my Mum told me  ;) )

I have tried again to find them on the 1851 to see if any of her sisters was doing the same thing but they don't want to be found.  ::)

Thanks for your help

Di

I agree! An opus is a piece of music. Therefore an opera (plural of opus) binder is someone who binds/collates pieces of music. QED (I think  ;D )

Gosh Toni you do come up with some interesting facts - thanks.

On the IGI, the only other daughter of Joseph and Mary Pattison was Emma Susannah Pattison born 21.09.1829. Matilda was born 25.01.1832 so I think the age of 25 on the '61 census was a bit of a fib, afterall, she was 29 and unmarried, so I guess she's entitled to a little adjustment to her age.

There are a few other girls on the IGI but I dont feel/ can't confirm they are related unless I can find them on the '51 or '41.

Back to the original question - her occupation.... Yes, I agree that she was an "Opera Binder" (probably sounds better than a Book Binder anyway  ::) )

Hi Di

I've found them on 1851 Census - at 11 Teal Street, Bethnal Green (HO 907 (107?) 1539 page 29.
Surname is Patterson there, with Joseph, son William, both shoemakers & daughters Matilda (aged 18!) & Emma (21). No profession for either daughter.
I still think it most likely that Opera Binder refers to shoes/slippers - I've several shoemakers in my lines & the family usually were in the same trade in some way - the females usually binders
The musical link is not really likely - I don't think musical scores and opera scores would have had separate binding processes
