Morton Valance - Mill
« on: Monday 26 November 07 22:12 GMT (UK) »
In the Will of Mary Birt she leaves a Mill to her son John. Unfortunately I am unable to read the name. Does anyone know of Mills in or near Morton Valance or of John or Mary Birt.
Regards
Tony

Hi Tony

Whenabouts was this event - was it, or Mary and her son - within Census range; possibly the name of the Mill is given as a Census address....? Wonder if it was a farmer's Mill or a Clothing Mill......there may have been Cloth Mills in the area:
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=15839

There was John BIRT at Epney, Moreton Valence in 1841 (age 66) and 1851 (73), Wheatenhurst area? He was a farmer, b Saul. Wife was named Ann.

1851 link:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~engcots/moretonvalence51.html

ANd this:
http://whaite.com/family/bailey/ch02.htm
Talks abt Mills in the Wheatenhurst area  - and a bit abt a Mary BIRT of Moreten Valence who married a BAILEY - the BAILEY's had Mills, I think - long page of text !

Are you able to post a partial image of the name you are unable to read? Maybe someone can make it out?

Cheers  ;D

Thanks for the replies. Sorry Ambly must have been tired when I made the post not putting in any dates.

Mary's Will was dated 27 July 1770 her maiden name was Fryer and she married James Birt at Fretherne on 11 May 1729. The Executors were two of her brothers William Fryer of Longney and John Fryer of Wheatenhurst.

The John Birt and Ann in Epney was her grandson and he was a son of John Birt to whom she left the Mill, he was also the brother of my 4xG Grandfather.

I attach a copy of the relevant part of the Will.

Also thanks for the links
Regards
Tony

Once again my thanks Ambly I think your right it does look like Rydors Mill I shall now have to ask if anyone knows or has heard of it.
My thanks also to Krisesjoint who resized the image for me. I am going to have to sort out my image package also remember to try lightening in these sort of instances.
Once again my thanks.

Hello Tony

I'm interested in your reference to John and Ann Birt of Epney, nr. Moreton Valance as I think they may be the parents of John Birt who married Martha Conduit.  In which case they would be my ancestors.  Can you help me with any further information?  The younger John Birt was born in Ellingham, Hants around 1793.

Grateful for any info you can give me.

Many thanks
Simowaud
