GenesReunited AGAIN!
« on: Wednesday 28 November 07 09:16 GMT (UK) »
Hope I have posted this on the correct topic field. I searched but couldn't find an existing thread for this, although I know there have been similar queries before.

One of my current contacts on GenesReunited (with 41,000+ names!) came up as a Hot Match giving details of my cousins and their families. However, I do not have their full details on my tree, to which I had previously allowed access . When I originally queried the vast number of family members I was told that it was for a Family History Project for a local village. Ok, so I accepted that as there was a member of my family from that village.

The problem is that this person has still allowed living persons to be visible. I have informed him that this is really very risky and removed his access to my tree.

Surely, GenesReunited should only allow genuine family researchers to use their site and should display of living persons (+ recently deceased) be banned?

My concerns are about identity theft and fraudulent transactions using maiden names etc.

I should be interested to hear other rootschatters views on this.

Hi
If the person doesn't remove your living people then contact GenesReunited direct, they are usually pretty good at taking action

You can stop living relatives being seen on your tree by going into My Account and under where your details are putting yes in the box to hide living relatives. This will hide relatives that were born in the last 120 years unless there is a Death date.

I have done this but also I don't usually put living relatives on or if I do I put Living as first name then the surname and only the year of birth.

I am very careful who I let see my tree after a bad experience on Genes.

hi judy

i was a member of GR about 2 years ago
when my father died i put his details onto the site
the next thing i knew someone who shall remain nameless not
only took his details but started working up my mothers(who is still alive)
side of the tree
this person was something like a cousin 3 generations back on my
fathers side but not connected to my mothers
next my fathers details are on rootsweb(within 6 weeks of his death)
i contacted the person and eventualy got them to remove the info
from rootsweb
their attitude was that if i didn't want it made public then i shouldn't put
in on
this person had a tree of 12,000 but when i started to talk about certain
people they didn't have a clue
next thing they had changed there name and denied all contact
i removed my details from GR and didn't renew my membership
its not so much the fact they took the information but they were not
checking to make sure it was right just copying
i thought that GR would not reveal details of living people but in my mothers
case i was wrong
anyway rant over and i think your right
people that are living should not have their details revealed
i would only be happy now to reveal my grandparents details and if i were
to re-join GR would not enter any details for my parents or any
living family member
the rule seems to be if you don't want it revealed then dont put it on
if you feel strongly about what this person has done then contact GR and
get them to remove it
i'm sure GR has some kind of privacy rules

ask the person to remove the details of your living relations, if they do not then contact GR direct who will ask them to do same.

When I joined GenesReunited two years ago, I decided against constructing a family tree which might expose the privacy of living relatives for obvious reasons. Some of the stories I've heard are absolutely appalling! To treat other people's concerns with such dismissive contempt is truly uforgivable.

I am speechless.............after seeing the above santas and there's a nearly month to go!   Very funny though..

Thanks to all of you who have commented on this regular topic. I will be more attentive in future to tree requests and check them regularly for people not hiding living relations.

The person concerned has e-mailed me with an apology. He said he had thought GenesReunited automatically removed details of living persons without any action on his part. I wonder?

everyone who was b. in the last 120 years is classed as a living relation unless you have a death for them.
