Intriguing!  But you forgot to tell us the names of your ancestors, so working out relationships might be tricky!

Do you have them on censuses prior to their departure?

... and what was the name of the ship that was wrecked? One of my families was shipwrecked on their way to Australia about then — they were in the Sir Fowell Buxton and rescued by the ship Richard.

What were the gx3 grandparents' occupations?  Might the letters have been references?

Possibly not given "I shall be happy to carry out their wishes."

But would their/his trade/occupation have given them a reason to be in Birmingham?

It must be really fantastic to have that letter.
