Sally,

Going by the tents in the background they are out in the country somewhere.

The ones with a crossed rifle badge on their left sleeve could be sharpshooters?

They all have a small round type badge on their upper right arms, this might help somebody identify the unit. (Edit - had a closer look - is it a badge of a bicycle wheel?)

Regards Michael.

Hi again--just relooking at my close up --you are right, small round badge, looks like a bike wheel. I would "like " this to be Sharpeshooters, as I know a relative or 2 was in them, although I know nothing about them.(sharpshooters that is)- there are medals on pic --also "13 m//" on shoulders--any one any clue??

Great pics...we are getting there...

The wheel could well signify a bicycle bn,  the puttees are wound from bottom to top. This would signify infantry

The crossed rifles are the tradesmans badge for a marksman.

Where did your two chaps live? Are they on a census anywhere, this would give us a clue.

I'm leaving work now, so will consult my books when I get home...
One more charge and then be dumb,

May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

In 1901 census the family in Battersea, they moved to New malden, about 1903. One brother-who I know from family was in Sharpshooters- was Frank Cowburn Thompson, family say he served under age, born 1883, not with family on 1901 census-- Other brother who may also have joined up was William Glossop Thompson, born 1882, and is on 1901 census--he later emigrated S Africa--
Any Help??
Thank-you all for your imput--identifying this will help I hope, to poss identify other photos of family, where we cant work out who is who!! also may help eliminate for an identity on other photo I posted--Thanks

I think the trees and grass look quite European. SA trees are sparser, and in particular, the grass we get here in the UK does nor grow well there, and they use a different species altogether, which looks very different to the grass in the picture.

If it is SA, then it is a temperate area, such as Cape Town, where European plant species grow rather better.

The medals are certainly Queens South Africa (3 bars) & Kings South Africa (2 bar) for the Boer War.

The photo is therefore after the war and no earlier than late in 1902 (when the KSA was issued).

The collar badge is bugging me!  :-\
Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.

I would say marksman badges on the sleeves, cyclist unit badges on upper right

and if my eyes don't deceive me, there are a couple of QSA's in there and a KSA

but i still don't know what that uniform is! :(

opps sorry neil, missed your post somehow  ;D

The star on the cuff, is  a 5 pointed star, commonly worn from 1 to 6 in number by soldiers in Volunteer and Territorial Battalions to signify 5 years efficient service for each star.
