Did either of the sisters have children that you know of?  There's an interesting marriage of a John Lally to a Lillian Morris in Bolton in 1910 and they seem to have had a son in Bolton in early 1913.  If this Lillian Morris is "Lilly" that might provide a clue to a stepfather's surname.

Actually the Lallys' son may have been born late 1912 and registered in 1913 in which case there's a matching death in Bolton in Mar 2000.

NB  Please don't name any living people on here, for security reasons.

Hi Ambly,  Yes I did say WW2 but I meant WW1. Told you I was a numpty!  Do you know where I can get any info on his army service as he lived in Westhoughton in 14-18?  I will look at the address he married from. I have looked up the male witness who lived in Atherton, but can't find any connection. I've looked at the census in quite an area round where the witness lived but turned up nothing. I think he knew him from working down the mines. The female witness was my Grandmothers sister.  I'm sorry, I didn't explain it correctly but the boxes for fathers name and occupation were empty except for a line. Will look up J Boydell in the 1901 census. Thank you so much.

Hi Suz, Good idea about the marriage cert, will do that. Many thanks.

Hi Anna, Will look the marriage up. If Lilly was called Morris then JW's mum could have married a Morris which will maybe help. It's another line to look down. Won't mention any living people. Thanks a lot.

Thank you all, Regards Lilian.

Thanks Jill! I got  quite excited myself as all the bits just kept dropping in to fit  ;D  I'm crossing my fingers for Lilian!!

If this family turns out to be right, Lilian - there's a goldmine awaiting on the DAVIES side....Ada Louisa DAVIES on 1871 and 1881 is quite findable  - I believe it's her -   born Chowbent Lancs, living in Atherton area - parents Mary b Dent YKS and John b Denbeighshire Wales..........

....and a tree here:  ( though there is no marriage or issue  info on it for Ada Louisa, it does take the DAVIES side back to the early 1700's)
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=vfairbrass&id=I3405

And would you believe it! The owner of the tree has last updated it 29 Nov 2007!!

Cheers  :D
