***COMPLETED*** Deciphering Help Please!
« on: Thursday 29 November 07 03:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Trying to decipher the birth place on this naturalisation record. I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure it out! All I have so far is, "near Steinau an der Oder, Breslau in the Kingdom of Prussia, Germany".

Thanks  :D

Sorry, no idea ???

Here's a page about Steinau (now Ścinawa) http://tinyurl.com/23t8o3

Near the bottom is a list of the communities which made up the town - I don't think that your place is named :(

Hi all,

Following your link, Geoff, I'm wondering if it could be a slight misspelling of Ransen (=Ransoon?)  :)
"My dear, I think the English pronounce it 'appiness"

I'd been searching maps etc and had come up with the same place!  Came back to post but already solved ...

Anyhow, I will post just to mention that I thought the document said Ransow - a sort of mix for the German and Polish names for the town.

The town can be found on Google maps.

German - Polish
Ransen - Reszow
Steinau an der Oder - Scinawa
Breslau - Wroclaw

Regards,

JAP

Thanks everyone for your help! I had deciphered the German-Polish naming except for Ransen, thanks again. The handwriting was so confusing ??? I guess now I can say this task is done!

Ciao  ;)
