What does this mean please.
« on: Thursday 29 November 07 10:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I was looking on FreeREG and came across this in the notes.

" All were recieved into the church, 15th Oct 1809"

I was looking under the name James Trower/ Thrower in Norfolk and his wife Elizabeth and their 9 children.

Its probably really obvious but as i havent come across it before, i wondered what it meant.

Many thanks

Hi Cookie

I have come across babies, baptised at home when very young (perhaps because they were not expected to survive) who were later received into the church as children or even as adults.

I believe Sue is right, that it is "the second part" of baptism, when the baptised person is welcomed by the church community.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Cookie

There is also confirmation, a religious rite confirming a baptised person, esp. at the age of discretion, as a member of the church. This rite applies to many religions. Baptism does symbolise admission to the church though and applies to children and adults so is quite likely considering the number of children in the family unit.

Were all the family recieved into the church on the same day

This can often mean a change of religion from C of E to Catholic
etc, it can also mean that the original record of the baptisms may
have been lost or uncertain.
So they family become re-christened. i.e. A change of church from
a distance away.

Where a private baptism is employed, there is a further rite (if the
child survives) of reception into church, or the public receiving of
the infant before the congregation at a service in the church as a
member of Christ's flock.

Thanks everyone.

I did think it was something to do with  baptisms but wasnt sure what.

What really confussed me was the fact that all their children were recieved into the church on the same day and Hannah their youngest was born 1809 13th July and baptised 23rd July only to be recieved into the church 15th October 1809.

Thanks again for all your help.
Its very much appreciated.
